In search of optimum filter performance, computer simulation has 
turned out to be an effective tool to answer complex design questions 
of filter media and filter elements. Therefore, at the Fraunhofer Institute 
for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM) a comprehensive simulation approach is 
pursued. This approach covers the virtual generation of geometries as well 
as the development of simulation tools for fluid flow and particle transport 
inside the filters. In the following, we will present in detail the current 
methods for filter simulation and point out the possibilities and the potential 
of the approach by real examples.
